Myth of Narcissus

In the many stories of ancient Greek mythology, one tale stands out for its reflection on self-love and fate. It is the story of Narcissus. This legend not only reveals the human desire for beauty but also warns of the tragedy that can come from excessive self-obsession.

Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephisus and the water nymph Liriope. He was exceptionally handsome, so beautiful that many people fell in love with him. However, he remained indifferent to their affections, often rejecting those who tried to win his heart.

One day, a nymph named Echo, cursed by Aphrodite, could only repeat the words of others and could not speak on her own. She fell deeply in love with Narcissus, but because of the curse, she could never express her feelings. She could only repeat what he said whenever he passed by. Attracted by her voice, Narcissus approached her, but never realized it was her.

Eventually, Narcissus was moved by her words and began to approach her. But when he finally came close, he realized that the person he had fallen for was someone who could not truly respond to him. He felt disappointed and left.

Later, Narcissus went to a clear lake and bent down to drink. As he looked into the water, he saw his own reflection and was immediately captivated by the beautiful face staring back at him. Thinking it was another young man, he tried to reach out to the image. But no matter how hard he tried, the reflection would not touch him. He became obsessed with his own image, spending days gazing at it until he eventually wasted away from longing.

Where he died, a beautiful flower grew, known as the "daffodil" (Narcissus), in memory of the young man who was lost in his own beauty.
